• Framework Laptops makes 2230 M.2 2TB drive available for Steamdeck

The title says it all. Framework has made a 2230 M.2 drive available in a 2TB capacity for your Steamdeck. Previously you had a 1TB Sabrent drive that just became available a few weeks ago or random 2230 drives on Amazon/eBay.

I’m not purchasing it at this point, but when I upgrade the storage this is one company I’d trust to got for a full 2TB drive.

    Purchase from Framework here.

  • The Switch Made me Purchase A Steam Deck

The Switch Made me Purchase A Steam Deck

When I logged back into my Steam account in January 2023 I noticed that it had been almost exactly 10 years since I had played BioShock 2. When my oldest daughter was about 1 1/2 life got too busy and I no longer had time to game, but now that she’s 12 and my youngest is 6, I’ve got time again.

What caused me to open up my Steam account again, the Nintendo Switch. We got one for the kids for Christmas as they’ve been asking for a while and we figured it was a good thing to have for a bunch of the travelling we do with figure skating (2 kids competing and my wife is a coach) plus it’s sometimes -40C in Prince George BC so the kids are inside instead of out playing with the friends.

Alongside the Switch I grabbed Hollow Knight for myself because it was highly rated and after watching a few videos it seemed like I’d enjoy the game. Oh boy did I ever. The only problem was, sharing with the kids. More than once in the first week I wanted to play Hollow Knight, but the kids had the Switch locked down and I had to wait.

    Enter Steam Deck

Ever since Valve announced the Steam Deck I had at least wondered if it was something I’d have time to use. I knew I’d enjoy it, but with three kids to get to after school activities, and work, and general life…would I actually have time to use it. The Switch showed me clearly that I would have time so I ordered one for myself for my birthday.

While I briefly looked at an OLED Switch, the Steam Deck had more possibility for me. A huge game library. Excellent emulation support. I already owned games that were deck compatible. Plus, the Steam Deck is a much more modern system and is likely to be useful longer than the aging processor in the OLED Switch.

    What Steam Deck

I purchased a 256GB Steam Deck, figuring it would have plenty of storage for a few big games and a bunch of Indie games. I haven’t had the system a week and I’m already almost out of storage though. I wouldn’t go back and get a 512GB one, but I would have ordered an extra microSD card to have on hand when the Steam Deck came in.

To go alongside the Steam Deck I grabbed the JSAUX carrying case. Yes the Steam Deck comes with a case, but it won’t hold a spare charger, wired headphones, and extra microSD cards. At $23.99 USD the JSAUX case offers all this, plus a stand in a size that’s barely bigger than the case the Steam Deck comes with.

I also grabbed the 8Bitdo Ultimate controller. This gives me a dedicated controller at my desk when I used the Steam Deck docked, and gives the family a 5th controller to use with the Switch via bluetooth when we want to play all together. I’ll talk more about the controller in a future post/video, but at this point I like it very much.

Initial Thoughts on the Steam Deck

With only a week under my belt with the Steam Deck, I’m no expert but so far it’s excellent. I’ve played around 3 hours of Hollow Knight and the controls feel excellent. I found the Switch joycons too small in my hand while the Switch was portable which made some of the basic moves in Hollow Knight difficult. The size of the Steam Deck grips, and the placement of the joysticks/buttons suits me much better than the Switch did.

It’s almost like Hollow Knight got a downgrade in difficulty just by using a controller setup that accommodates adult sized hands.

I don’t find the Steam Deck too heavy for my 40 – 60 minute gaming sessions at night.

The speakers on the Steam Deck are far superior to what the Switch provides.

I’m still getting used to the interface and have had some minor struggles getting around SteamOS. Nothing major, but I need to spend some time using the interface. The Switch interface is much more user friendly.
